-Variations: Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming
Often known for another of his jazzy solo cello pieces, "Julie-O," Mark Summer's variations on "Lo, How a Rose" push the boundaries on what sounds we expect to hear out of a cello, and all with a delightful, jazzy/folksy style. I love pieces like this that break me out of my own box and teach me new ways to play the cello.
- O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
This arrangement features multiple cello and mandocello lines. Reflecting the lyrics of the timeless carol, I wanted the song to feel like it was a journey - a slow, steady one, with feelings of longing and hope.
- Walking in the Air
This beautiful song by Howard Blake is known for being in the 1982 British film, "The Snowman." I recorded the vocal and piano part on cello, with little variation from the original. I loved the soaring quality of the melody and thought it would be perfect on cello.
- Main Title from Home Alone
I grew up watching the original Home Alone with my family when it came on TV each Thanksgiving night, so it has a special place in my heart. I grew up with John Williams' brilliant soundtracks in many of my favorite movies. This 8-cello arrangement was written for the cello section of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, to be premiered at our holiday pops concerts this Dec., 2023. I had fun picking different lines from the orchestra score to include in the arrangement, and using cello to imitate horns, celeste, and choir.
- Away in a Manger
I was surprised how moved I was when I first heard Ola Gjeilo's acapella choral arrangement of Away in a Manger. It is beautiful in its simplicity, which seems to be exactly right for the carol.
